JOB SUMMARY

The Pharmacy vision is to deliver optimal medication management across all dimensions of care, every time, and that each pharmacy team member understands how he or she contributes to the health system's vision of achieving that commitment to patients and families. Each pharmacy team member is essential in ensuring that UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper Pharmacy exits to ensure safe, effective, and affordable medication use in our communities, one person at a time.

The Technician serves as a part of the healthcare team at UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper and collaborates with other team members, to provide optimal care. The Technician accepts responsibility, authority, and accountability for management and provision of care in accordance with the current policies and procedures.

Communication: Ensures timely and consistent communication. 

  • Ensures timely responses to service line requests and inquiries.   
  • Greets and assists visitors to the department.  
  • Answers all incoming telephone calls and provides accurate information as needed.  
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with other healthcare professionals.

Quality: Checks and controls quality and accuracy of work

  • Prioritizes workflow ensuring all services are performed in a timely manner.  
  • Considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration, and adverse effects.

Teamwork: Works within a team to achieve patient and team goals.  

  • Participates in the onboarding of other team members.  
  • Shares and initiates regular and professional communication with co-workers. 
  • Facilitates and participates in regular staff meetings.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to adjust activities to accommodate the needs of team members/internal customers. 
  • Resolves conflicts independently, as appropriate. 
  • Accepts responsibility for actions and acts positively upon feedback from others.

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or GED required. 2 Year/Associate's Degree preferred.

Experience: Required - Acute: Minimum of two pharmacy skills (examples may include medication distribution, sterile compounding, and/or medication listing activities) required. OR hired as a Pharmacy Technician 1 Certified and now competently performing a second pharmacy skill as described above. 2 years of experience Required - Outpatient Oncology: Minimum of two years of experience in any setting with one year of experience in sterile compounding (of IV and/or chemotherapy admixture). 2 years of experience Required - Specialty Pharmacy: Minimum of two years in any setting required with one year in specialty setting preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure:

  • Current registry with applicable State Board(s) of pharmacy required.
  • PTCB or NHA Certification within 60 days of hire, or proof of enrollment in pharmacy school/FPEGG/FPGEC required.
  • A minimum of one specialized certificate/certification from PTCB, ASHP or NBMTM (examples include but are not limited to product verification, medication history, hazardous drug management, billing/reimbursement, controlled substances diversion prevention, medication therapy management, sterile compounding) required.

Additional Skills/Requirements Required: State Registration and/or evidence of renewal is required for both Pharmacists and Technicians fifteen days prior to expiration and Technicians are required to be either certified through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA), or be actively enrolled in pharmacy school, or be active in Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) or Foreign Pharmacy Equivalency Certification (FPGEC). Considerable knowledge and application of basic math skills, including ratio and proportion relationships; strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Basic technology skills. Other duties as outlined in UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper and facility specific policies and procedures. Ability to drive/travel to multiple facilities/locations as needed. Ability to work as part of a high performing, change ready and resilient team.

Additional Skills/Requirements Preferred: Considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration, and adverse effects; the ability to demonstrate patient interview skills and strong written and verbal communication skills with other healthcare professionals. Experience with inventory management.

The job requires constant sitting, standing, walking, and bending/stooping. Frequent repetitive body movements. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs. occasionally. For any weight over 35 lbs. use Safe Handling Equipment.
